They appear in the same searches, and comparing them head-on would be unfair in both directions. Here is what they actually do.
WhatsApp Web only. Blurs chats automatically after inactivity, restores on mouse movement, and adds an optional PIN lock. Free, with a 4.9 star rating from 83 ratings and about 7,000 users as of August 28, 2026.
Where it fits: If the only thing you ever need to hide is WhatsApp Web from shoulder-surfers, this dedicated tool does that one job well. It does not blur other sites, and it is not a screen-share redaction tool.
A step-away tool: it blurs or shields the page after inactivity, tab switches, or idle, with saved element masks and privacy zones in its Premium tier ($14.99 a year, non-renewing). About 3,000 users and a 3.9 star rating from 11 ratings as of August 28, 2026.
Where it fits: It protects an unattended screen from people walking past. Its own FAQ states it does not prevent screenshots or recording, so it solves shoulder-surfing, not screen-share redaction.
Start with three questions. First: do you blur things once in a while, or the same things every day? Occasional manual blurring is free in several of these tools, and ZeroBlur or Blurr.ing's free tier will serve you indefinitely. Daily repeated blurring is an automation problem, which is what DataBlur, Smart Blur and Blurr.ing Premium actually sell.
Second: does anything outside the page leak? If you share whole windows, your tab strip is visible, and Blurr.ing is the only tool in the table that masks tab titles and favicons. If notifications are your risk, no extension can help; that is an operating system setting, and our screen share privacy checklist covers it.
Third: which browser? Firefox rules out Blurr.ing, ContextBlur and Smart Blur immediately. Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc) keep every option open.
