Watermark and black out your ID copy before you send it
Landlords, employers and online services ask for a copy of your ID all the time. Mark every copy with who it is for, why and when, hide what they don’t need, and the copy is hard to reuse anywhere else. Your image stays in this tab.

Quick answer
To make a safe copy of an ID, write the recipient, the purpose and the date across the whole document, and black out the fields the recipient does not need. A watermark that crosses every field means the copy cannot be cropped clean and reused for another application. Governments recommend exactly this: the Dutch KopieID app adds who the copy is for, what it is for and the date, and Germany’s ID portal says data not needed for identification can and should be blacked out. This tool does both in your browser without uploading the image.
Sharing your screen?
Hide personal data on web pages before anyone sees it
Blurr.ing is a Chrome extension that blurs any part of a web page before you share your screen, record or take a screenshot: an address, a document number, a whole form. Drawing blurs is free and unlimited.

- Screenshots come out with the blurs already in the picture. 5 free, unlimited on Premium.
- Auto Blur, Blur Text and Tab Privacy hide things for you on every page. Try each one free.
Free to install, for Chrome on a computer.
How to watermark a copy of your ID
- 1
Open a photo or scan of your ID
Drop it on the tool, paste it, or choose a file. JPEG, PNG and WebP work. PDF files are not supported: take a photo or export the page as an image first.
- 2
Black out what the recipient does not need
Drag a box over each field to hide, such as a card access number or a national ID number the recipient is not allowed to keep. Boxes are solid, so nothing underneath survives.
- 3
Write who, why and when
Enter the recipient and the purpose. The date is added for you. The text repeats diagonally across the whole document.
- 4
Download or copy
Save a PNG or JPEG, or copy the image and paste it into the form or email. The file is created on your device.
The watermark
What to write on an ID copy
Keep it short and specific. Three facts are enough.
Who it is for
The company or person receiving it: “Northside Lettings”, not “landlord”. A copy marked for one recipient is hard for a fraudster to use anywhere else.
What it is for
The single purpose: “rental application”, “account opening”. If the copy turns up attached to anything else, the mismatch is obvious.
The date
Added automatically. It shows when you handed it over, so an old copy cannot pass as fresh.
Blacking out
What you can usually black out
Hide what the recipient does not need, and leave what they do. Some organizations are legally required to see a full copy, so ask when in doubt.
- Card access numbers printed on the card, such as the six-digit CAN on a German ID card.
- The document number, unless the recipient has to record it.
- A national ID number such as the Dutch BSN, when the recipient is not one of the organizations allowed to keep it.
- Your photo, when the recipient only needs your name and date of birth.
Rules differ by country. The official pages below are the source for each point.
Why this tool
How this compares with the official tools
KopieID (Netherlands)
The Dutch government’s app does the same job on a phone or tablet. This tool works in any browser, on a laptop too.
FiligraneFacile (France)
The French government’s service receives your document on its servers and deletes it after the first download, or after 24 hours. Here the image is never sent anywhere.
Private by design
Your ID never leaves your device
No upload
The image is opened in this browser tab and edited there. The page makes no request with your file and stores nothing.
Boxes are pixels
Every box is painted into the image itself. The download has no hidden layer with the original data under it.
A fresh file
The download is a new image, so camera details hidden in the original photo, such as GPS location, are not carried over.
