Quick answer
To redact an image safely, cover the sensitive area with a solid box and export a new flat image. A solid box replaces the pixels, so nothing underneath survives in the file. Blur and pixelation only smear them, and light settings on text can be reversed. This tool paints the mask into the pixels and re-encodes the image, which also strips its EXIF and GPS metadata.

Blur the page before you take the screenshot
Most screenshots that need redacting are of a web page: a dashboard, an inbox, an invoice. Blurr.ing blurs any part of the live page in Chrome, so every screenshot, screen share and recording only ever contains blurred pixels. Drawing blurs is free and unlimited.
- Draw a box, select text or click an element. Free and unlimited.
- Screenshots come out with the blurs already in the picture. 5 free, unlimited on Premium.
- Auto Blur, Blur Text and Tab Privacy hide things for you on every page. Try each one free.
Free to install, for Chrome on a computer.
How it works
How to redact an image online
- 1
Open your image
Drop an image onto the tool, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V, or choose a file. PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF all work.
- 2
Pick a mask
Choose Solid box for text you must hide completely, or Blur or Pixelate for a softer look on faces and backgrounds.
- 3
Drag over what to hide
Drag a rectangle across each sensitive area. Every area is painted into the pixels as you release; Undo removes the last one.
- 4
Download or copy
Download a PNG, JPEG or WebP, or copy the image straight to your clipboard. The file is created on your device.
Box, blur or pixelate
Which mask actually hides the data
Blur and pixelation look secure, and on short text they sometimes are not. Pick the mask for what is underneath, not for how it looks.
| Mask | Safe for text? | Look | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid box | Yes | Hard edge | Passwords, keys, card and account numbers, any text |
| Blur (strong) | Usually | Soft haze | Faces, photos, backgrounds, long passages |
| Pixelate (big blocks) | Usually | Mosaic | Faces, avatars, thumbnails |
| Light blur or small blocks | No | Subtle | Nothing secret: short text can be reconstructed |
Why there is no upload
A redaction tool should not see your secrets
Most online editors upload your screenshot to a server to process it, including the parts you are about to hide.
No upload, ever
The file is read by your browser and drawn into a canvas on your device. This page sends no image data anywhere.
Pixels, not layers
Each mask is painted into the image itself. The download has no hidden original under a shape, unlike PDF or slide annotations.
Metadata dropped
The download is a fresh encode, so EXIF details from the original, such as GPS location and camera model, are not copied over.
